It has often been said that, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I disagree. Vegetables do a much better job at keeping you out of the doctors office. Many people who do their best to eat healthy place fruits and vegetables in the same category. However, vegetables are far superior on the health scale. Fruit is nature’s treat for us. It used to be our dessert, but has since been replaced by brownies, ice cream, cookies and other snack foods. Now by comparison, fruit has become a health food. Time to start treating fruit like the sugar filled treats they are. For your convenience I’ve ranks some common fruits below in terms of health benefit to sugar ratio.
Very good for you: avocado, blueberries, blackberries, coconut, lemon, lime, cranberries.
Pretty good for you: strawberries, pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, pomegranate.
Still good for you but eat in moderation: apple, cherries, figs, apricot, honeydew, nectarine, orange, peach, pears, plums, kiwis, lychee.
Treat these has a healthy alternative to dessert: bananas, cantaloupe, dates, grapes, guava, mango, melons, papaya, passion fruit, persimmon, plantain, watermelon.
Basically candy: raisin, dried fruit, fruit leather, jam, jellies, canned fruit.
